Modified Design
The 1828-1837 Capped Bust dime type is an adaptation of the previous 1809-1828 style and is the same except for certain minor modifications. The diameter is slightly smaller, and the border has denticles spaced closer together than on the previous type (although some transitional pieces have the old denticle style). The stars are slightly smaller, and there is some subtle restyling.
Dimes of this format were made from 1828 through 1837 inclusive.
Aspects of Collecting
No dates are rarities, although there are several elusive varieties within the range. An interesting variety is the overdate 1830/29. The rarity of this coin is hard to determine for the overdate is very difficult to ascertain on all but the finest specimens. First publicized by Don Taxay in Scott's Encyclopedia in 1971, at first the issue was considered to be rare. However, quite a few have been identified since that time.
For the year 1828 two notable varieties exist, the large date with curl base 2, and the small date with square base 2.
Examples are available in all grades from Good through Uncirculated, with Very Good to Very Fine being the most often seen. Uncirculated pieces are elusive, and ones in higher states of the Uncirculated category are rare.
